Sorry about that, folks. I’ve been in STEMland 24/7 trying to wrap things up at work, and must have redrawn Yuan about 11 times by now. He deserves better than this.
I hope you like male gaze from the perspective of the gazee because that’s where this is going. We’re getting up in there like that one Portrait of a Lady on Fire scene that everyone always references.
Side note: am I gonna do Portrait of a Lady on Fire with Bernard? Do you even have to ask?

As someone who is so deep in big science grant land at the moment, I sympathize (hence BBD coming out every week and a half-ish). Let me start with the important stuff. If Portrait of a Lady on Fire doesn’t happen with Bernard, I will riot. RIOT. Also, please dear god, let him sit in a room with tastefully painted pale blue paneling.
Secondly, I am living for the male gaze perspective of Yuan, it’s what Bernard would have wanted. I think blue is his color. Also dark blue with black, he is living on the edge and I like it. Is Bernard drawn to the blue because it was hella expensive in his time and it marks Yuan as a good catch who can probably support his painter lifestyle?
Fifteen minutes IS the exact right time. I do like this sort of pull out moment where all the staff is running around and scheming and spying and then the camera shot widens and you see Yuan rolling in, completely aware of everything that’s going on because that’s exactly how he planned it lol.
‘Scuse, I am stealing the blue-paneled room idea. Bernard, after all, needs somewhere to sit while observing (and secretly painting) a gentleman with a compelling case of The Man Vapours who is less than enthused about his Italian fiancée. Grazing fingers! Washing carrots! And he’s fluent in French for those extra Cannes Film Festival points.
Haha, Yuan’s aesthetic is “looks like he has secrets,” but he doesn’t like people actually knowing them. That’s what the dark blue is for. Gotta look mysterious and elegant! For sure, Bernard doesn’t mind the male gazing: how are you supposed to show off your husband unless everyone is looking at him? LOOK AT HIM. LOOK.

Yep, we only see the colors when viewing the scene from Yuan’s or Shu’s perspectives—kinda, since we also see them in third person—and you already know why!
