Haunted 1-11
You, ’90s NYC expert: Uh, Metrocards in the late ’90s had a much smaller white band, and the “INSERT THIS WAY” strip was a duller gold.
Me: Arrggh, I know, I merged layers like an idiot and had to move on. Arrrgh. Trust me, I’m upset with myself too. But on the bright side, I did remember that the 6 didn’t resume stopping at local stops until later that year, and you can look forward to a shiny green sticker haphazardly slapped on next to the others in subsequent comics.
(Sometimes Simlish will be translated, sometimes not because blee bloo blah excuses. But I can promise no gratuitous Chinese. Jokes that someone wouldn’t catch unless they spoke Chinese, though, those’ll be chilling with the stealth theater jokes Yuan is fond of.)
(Some cameos here, but the last three people are rando townies I pulled out of my ass because there were no takers.)
Aww, Yuan’s expressions are so adorable when he looks at the couple and the baby. How cute.
I’m not doing so hot on the cameos this time around. I only recognise Cathy’s Case. The couple in the first pick has ought to be a cameo, but I don’t think I know the story.
Them HD TVs, look at that house on fire! The headphones ad made me laugh. “Got no money? Buy smaller headphones!” At least that’s how I’m choosing to read it ๐
Love the little public garden, so pretty. And the leaves on the tree changing colour, almost makes me miss early autumn. Except then I’d moan about the weather and the upcoming winter, so never mind…

That couple is Cai and Angelico from Xaos (here they are getting married dressed as Sexy Santa and the Grim Reaper). I’ll keep the gushing short, but I think Fig’s sim design is the best goddamn thing—you can spot her creations a mile away, what with the 500 tattoos and piercings per character and the neon streetwear. It’s too cold for the crop tops but you can imagine.
Uh-oh. I may have botched that. The ad was supposed to be a “FREE EARBUDS” joke, but the cordless fitness-stuff earbuds are anachronistic, so I went with a different design. But, hey, if it works the other way, it works.
Interesting that he would be walking past a TV showing a burning house while running into people doing these very specific actions… isn’t it?
I wondered if they were from Xaos, the style did give me that vibe! Also, I have identified another cameo I think, short story lisabee in the garden! I think I haven’t done that poorly in these where is wally chapters after all ๐
Aah, it’s an ad for the free earbuds, that should have clicked! Of course!
Um… crickets I’m sure you know exactly what comes to my mind when I see a burning house in simlit, heh. Wait, is this the fire and air thing? There’s definitely been elements of that in the gayngst/Bernard’s first appearance page!
Oh, sweet, you recognize Fig’s work! Not surprising, considering you read more SimLit than I do. And yes, that’s Lisabee pollinating away in the community garden!
Drawing on my relatively lower SimLit-eracy, I’m going to guess that the burning house brings to mind… Morgyn’s situation in BC? The only other thing I can think of is the Von Haunt Estate burning down and I’ve already said too much; please be distracted by Yuan standing against backdrops of clouds, billowing majestically in the wind, and using/being described by air metaphors.
(HAHAHHAA, “elements of that,” I see what you did there.)
I just love the colors of the “At the very least, I don’t stand out” panel.
Cai’s pants are ICONIC.
So many great backgrounds! My favorites are definitely the garden and the subway entrance. (And for the latter, not just because you drew Petra!) The panel where Xiyuan is using the card kiosk is striking; I wonder what the people in the foreground are arguing about?
But again, the fifth panel… YOU DREW PETRA! MY P-SHEP! MY PEESH! MY PICKLEJUICE GIRL! (Sorry, I should cool it with the in-joke nicknames.) She looks great. Love the Timbs. Though, I feel the need to warn the girl in the blue peacoat that P-Shep’s kind of a fuccboi. Don’t give her that look, bisexual-bob girl! She’ll break your heart!
Maybe the couple is arguing because the lady gave The Look to Sim!Peesh. Other than that, I have no clue.
LOLOLOL okay I am freaking delighted. The panels grow more beautiful each week and Yuan is living HIS BEST LIFE GODDAMN IT. I had a visceral reaction to the sight of that metro card. So many memories.
Also this is just going to send me on a spiral of exploring all the cameos. All new to me! ::frantically adds to list::
Yuan’s best life is waving to a baby and buying a Metrocard… andabandoninghisfamilyovernightwhichsendshisexwifeintoadepressivespiralandleaveshisyoungsontodealwiththefallout, whatever don’t think about it METROCARD!!!
Arrrgh, yes, tell me, there’s so much stuff I want to read but keep dropping the ball on because I can barely keep on top of the weekly update schedule as-is.
Abandoning his who? I didnโt catch that last part ๐๐๐ (flashback to the very beginning of the story when I was like: okay I want Yuan to live his best life but he is not my fave).
Man, shout out to your weekly update schedule. I remember the halcyon days when I thought I could maintain it.
Your cameos remind me of who I need to be reading yo!
I’m guessing Yuan doesn’t take public transportation that often if he has to question the card’s color change.
“At the very least I don’t stand out” Oooof. I know he’s most likely smiling at the couple in the panel he thinks that thought, but his smile is too genuine to look forced, which makes me question his words. He doesn’t seem to mind not standing out. Maybe he even welcomes it. I guess I would question why he welcomes it – what makes blending in a preferable option? Is he introverted? Did he do something (perhaps criminal)? Haha is it because of his parents fucking phone calls?
Yep, he’s an introvert! He also… did do something, which his parents certainly let everybody know.
It’s true, he certainly hasn’t had to take the subway recently.
Ah. His parents are SO fun. Can’t imagine why he doesn’t talk to them, as though they clearly have the healthiest relationship.
